This PolicyBristol policy briefing, co-authored with National Energy Action, summarises our research on indoor air quality vulnerability. Our research creates a better understanding of the complex drivers of vulnerability to poor indoor air quality by visualising the three sources of indoor air pollution. First, environmental sources, such as traffic fumes, penetrate the material forms that constitute a person’s immediate surroundings. Second, structural sources occur within the build of a property, such as the type of heating or ventilation. Third, human sources are rooted in people’s behaviour in indoor spaces, such as smoking or overcrowding.

This article surveys 30 experts to provide the first structured expert judgement of how weather and climate directly impact mortality, using the UK as an example. The research was recently published in The Lancet Planetary Health, led by Dann Mitchell (University of Bristol).

This report used interviews and financial diaries to investigate the lived experiences and behaviour changes made in low-income households as people sought to reduce their energy bills in the winter of 2022/23. The work was a collaboration between University of Bristol and National Energy Action led by Ed Atkins.
